Post Description

Muddy Waters - The Lost Tapes (1971)
Recorded live in 1971.

Frontcover only.

Muddy Waters is one of the founding fathers of Mississippi Delta Blues, which he brought to Chicago in 1943. He was born McKinley Morganfield in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, on April 4, 1915, and by the time he was 17, he first became a singer, then a harmonica player, and finally an accomplished guitarist.

Muddy's trademark guitar was a battered red Telecaster and you can hear him bond with it on "Honey Bee" and see him slice off slide solos that sound like uncoiling razor-wire on "Long Distance Call." Both "Long Distance Call" and a rare interview can be seen on this enhanced CD through a CD-ROM. It's incredible to view, almost like being in the front row at one of his live recorded concerts in 1971.

Muddy first recorded with Aristocrat Records (later renamed to Chess) from around 1948 to 1976. Success came in 1948 with "I Can't Be Satisfied," which built a blues empire for the record company. Unfortunately, the record company was turning out LP after LP by Muddy that misrepresented his sound-Muddy Waters was definitely better in concert than in studio recordings!

During that time very few of his shows were taped. In 1971 Muddy and his band hooked up with a tour managed by the late Link Wyler, who also managed Big Mama Thornton. The tour included Thornton, Waters, Big Joe Turner, Bee Houston, J.B. Hutton, and George Harmonica Smith. Fortunately for us, Link taped the 1971 tour. Sadly, Muddy Waters died in 1983, but thanks to TopCat founder Richard Chalk and the estate of McKinley Morganfield, The Lost Tapes will return to us this legendary performer.
