Some may say that the sudden rise of folk-pop has left the scene somewhat over-crowded but when you hear this, you'll know there's room for one more.
 
Sophie Madeleine offers an enchanting 10-track album which effortlessly channels both heartache and happiness. It is credit to Sophie that she somehow manages to make lyrics like "The stars won't shine until you're mine" contrast yet at the same time perfectly match her chirpy melodies.
 
One highlight is 'Song To Fall In Love To', a slow yet captivating track which keeps it simple although still benefits from Madeleine's multi-instrumentalist skills as well as giving her romantic poetry a chance to shine. The title track 'The Rhythm You Started' offers a more lively approach and utilises Madeleine's voice not just for words but also to make beats. As for this release's forthcoming single 'Oil & Gold"; it's no wonder that this has already recieved Radio 2 support as it truly shows Madeleine's ability to merge happiness and saddness as well as contrasting the uptempto with slower rhythms. However the lead single is certainly not the only time the full talent of this Brighton artist can be heard.
 
Overall this record is an indie delight. From the wonderfully emotional heart-on-sleeve 'Come Follow Me' to the country-influenced 'Little One', from the opening track of 'Stars' to the equally (if not more so) enjoyable closer 'Hypothetically Yours', this sophomore album is a treat to the ears of all those who like their music with a unique feel.
