Barton Hollow kicks off with "20 Years", a song about a secret that has been kept for two decades. The production on "20 Years" is kept simple & haunting. The most beautiful addition to this song is the use of a mandolin that adds depth to the bridge & later verses. Charlie Peacock's eloquent production is evident on "I've Got This Friend". It kicks off with a light & airy banjo that mirrors the playfulness of this song about two people who are trying to set up their friends on a date. The third song on Barton Hollow, "C'est la mort", is about being so in love with someone you're willing to follow them anywhere, even into death. "C'est la mort" is the Civil Wars meets the Beatles with Joy Williams elegant piano playing. In keeping with the less is more theme, "To Whom It May Concern" is one of the simplest yet most alluring songs on the record. This song about loving someone from a distance is enhanced with the addition of a string section. This added depth perfectly conveys the longing both people feel for each other, if Joy & John Paul's vocals weren't enough to do so. The song most people will be familiar with on this record is "Poison & Wine". Charlie Peacock's production is superb with the build of the music at the end that drives the hurt of this song home. The sixth song on the record, "My Father's Father" is a song about longing to return home to the family & love you've left behind. The addition of the steel guitar gives it a dream-like feel, while the fiddle towards the end adds a bit of Appalachia.
