If you use SpotNet regularly, it’s worth checking which version you have installed. The older, unofficial SpotNet 2.0 can still browse spots, but you may run into problems when it tries to unpack newer archive formats. If you want to keep browsing and downloading in the same Windows application, switch to SpotNet Classic. The SpotNet tutorial walks you through installing it, connecting to your Usenet provider, and downloading your first spot.

Why switch to SpotNet Classic?

SpotNet Classic looks a little dated, but it comes with a built-in version of SABnzbd that can download, verify, repair, and unpack files. It supports RAR5 and 7-Zip archives and can read a password stored in the NZB file. When the uploader includes the password this way, SpotNet can pass it to SABnzbd automatically, saving you from having to copy and paste it yourself.

If you prefer to keep browsing and downloading separate, use SpotNet or SpotWeb to find and save the NZB file, then open it in a standalone downloader such as SABnzbd, NZBGet, or Alt.Binz. This setup also works well if you browse on your computer but run your downloader on another device, such as a NAS or mini-PC.

What to do when a download is incomplete

If your downloader reports missing articles, a backup Usenet provider can help. Check which backbone your current provider uses before adding a second account. Two providers with different names can use the same underlying server network, so they may be missing the same parts of a post. A backup account on a different backbone gives your downloader another place to look for those missing parts. If you only run into this occasionally, a prepaid block account can work well as a backup. For more on how provider networks overlap, see the guide to Usenet backbones.

Where to find the password for a SpotWeb download

Some downloads listed on SpotWeb contain password-protected archives. If the download finishes but fails during unpacking, check the error message. If your downloader asks for a password, open the NZB file in a text editor such as Notepad and search for password. If you find a tag like <meta type="password">, the text inside it is the archive password.

How to add subtitles to a downloaded video

If your video comes without subtitles in your language, look for an SRT file that matches the release or cut you downloaded. Subtitles for a different cut can start in sync and then drift out of sync as the video plays. Save the SRT file in the same folder as the video and give both files the same base name, for example MyVideo.mkv and MyVideo.srt. Many media players will pick up the subtitle file automatically. You can also select it manually from your player’s subtitle menu. To find an SRT file, start with this list of: https://nzbusenet.com/en/subtitle-download-sites-download-srt-files/
