-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Originally slated as an early release from Free Boot Generation, this project
was eventually shelved (for numerous reasons) and remained unreleased until
today. Whilst work on the recording has been carried out by them it shouldn’t be
considered as part of their catalogue and I’ve labelled it accordingly. Of
course the real attraction here is the fact we have yet another, previously
uncirculating recording finally making its way into the wider collecting circles
and that can never be a bad thing.

There’s been one or two soundboard snippets from this show doing the rounds for
a while now and popping up on various releases so it’s great to finally get to
hear the whole, complete show. It’s a very respectable audience

recording and the overall sound is very clear and rich. Prince is a little
distant sounding at times and overall the vocals aren’t quite as clear as the
rest but I may be nit-picking a little here, as none of this really detracts too
much from the finished product, and it really is not far off from hitting an EX
rating. The audience are at just the right level for me, not so loud as to be
distracting but at the same time, not too quiet as to lose any ‘live’ feel.
Anyway, enough about that, let’s move onto the content itself.

Disc 1 is really nothing out of the out ordinary in terms of content and is a
fairly typical example of most of the openers from the tour. Prince is in a
jovial mood and banters regularly with the audience and there’s some nice
interaction during a lengthy ‘La, La, La Means I Love U’ but that’s about it.
Disc 2 saves the show from slipping into the mundane with a couple of rarities
during a rather lengthy and enjoyable piano section. Diamonds and Pearls makes a
brief appearance but to hear Free dropped in there is a rare treat indeed. The
remainder of the show continues as one would expect aside the little ‘bootleg’
joke at the end from Prince (captured after the show had finished). Considering
we’re now listening to that very recording today, it’s certainly not without its
sense of irony and a fun little addition to the set.

It’s always a pleasure to get a previously uncirculating recording in your hands
and whilst the content itself may not be the greatest example of an ONA show
there is, to have it at all is really something to grateful for and so I doff my
hat to the guys for setting this one free.
